It has to do with supplemental features.  Some supplementary features require a "middle-man" of sorts to place the call on hold, hence the need for the MTP.  Same with older H323 v1 gateways.

why do I need a media termination point. When I make a call from the 7940 to the asterisk voicebox, it works without a problem.
Where is the difference between a direct call and a forwarded call ?
