[cisco-voip] why do i need cmd " card type 0 0

I added a VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 - 2-Port RJ-48 Multiflex Trunk - T1/E1 to my 2821 router.  and for some reason i needed to add the "card type 0 0" command to the router before i could see the t1 controllers.  This stump me be cause i never had to do this before.  Can someone explain to me why now i have to add this command
