[cisco-voip] Handsets stop working

I've got one particular 7941G-GE that we have had to replace the handset on 3 times so far, it will stop working, in that you can hear fine through the speaker but the microphone has no output. We have replaced the coil cord, but, as of yet, not replaced the set itself.
The phone is on a desk underneath a hutch with under-cabinet fluorescent lighting. Some of us suspect that may be a cause of the problem, but for those who have seen that issue with other phones/systems, they have noted that by unplugging the handset, it will "discharge" over some period of time and again become usable. That is not the case here, the handset never again works.
We 'dismantled' one of the handsets that came back and examined it for damage/spills/etc, and found nothing of the sort.
Has anyone run into this one before, or have any tips to neutralize the issue? Our next two steps are to replace the set (not too confident this will solve any issue), or to have the office re-arranged so as to place the phone away from the lights.
