you need a "no boot manual" in the switch global configuration setting. 

for some reason, it comes defaulted to boot manually? weird. 

and, with these things, the boot settings are not in the 'show startup/running config'. which had me stumped. it's in 'show boot'

Using the boot manual global configuration command, the module can be booted separately from the router

OK, I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but when I boot my 3945 I get the following error: 

ilpm_fault-5-ilpm_warning: ether switch network modules with poe support need to be reloaded to function properly 

I have no idea how to reload this thing. And reloading the router doesn't help. 

I'm hunting down for some documentation (go figure) as a starting point, but just thought someone might have gone down this path before.
