I have to agree with Erick on lifespan, I frankly don’t expect a 12 year no maintenance required lifespan from anything electronic. There are things that will last that long like some home appliances but most will require repair along the way.

The manufacturing standards of 20-30 years ago may have provided more rugged long lasting devices but with very little room for inline feature upgrades and expansion, now you get a shorter lifespan but a much greater possibility of being able to get new features several times over the lifespan of the device through simple firmware upgrades.

There are benefits to both types of hardware and a ROI calculations are not the same.

While these old systems may be rock solid (as can Cisco with a good design) We’ve replaced two Nortel and are in the process of replacing a Siemens/ROLM system.

There are many compelling reasons to stay with an old system but there are also many compelling reasons to switch to your VoIP system of choice.

Single wire to the desktop
Integration with Exchange and Outlook.
No gigantic rat’s nest of cross connects from 66 or 110 blocks.
XML Apps
The phones are no longer ‘dumb’ endpoints
The most adored feature from many of our end users is the BLF.
You can fit an entire VoIP solution in one rack opposed to the monstrosities these ‘old’ PBX systems are


Honestly, 12 years is good for what the devices do.  Would any of you expect a 12 year lifespan from your smartphone?

Agreed Chris as I have ROLM single and Multi-nodes that approach the 30 year acid test and continue to chug right along like the day they were installed Sir.

A Cisco product manager for the some of the phones said they design the phones to last 10-12 years of normal use.

All,

Anyone got any input into average life expectancy of the 79XX series of phones?
We have had our 7960’s now for about 5 years and starting to see an upturn in the number of units experiencing failures of different types (and yes they are EOL).
Any input on newer models?
I have been googling but did not find any info. I know environment/users have a lot to do with it. Just trying to get a “average” if possible.
