IMS is actually a component in each service that uses directory lookups.  This means CTI and Tomcat at a minimum, on each node, will have their own IMS and do their own ldap operations.   You should be able to confirm this with packet captures and/or logs at the ldap server to see where the queries are coming from.

Looking at the schema in the link below and I was wondering if IMS exists only in the Publisher or in every Subscriber...
