[cisco-voip] Changing DNS entries in Call Manager 8.6.2

Quick correction - I should have said "the primary DNS server assignment" and not simply "DNS assignments", which after reading my message a 2nd time might imply that any DNS entry change would regenerate a new license MAC.

Hope this helps.

The DNS assignments make up part of the hash used to generate the license MAC address in UCM 8.x. If you need to update the DNS entries, my recommendation would be to simply:

1. Document the current license MAC address. Would also be helpful to to have your Cisco TAC support contract number (if needed).

2. Update the DNS entries

3. Document the new license MAC address

4. Open a TAC case to request for a new license based on the new license MAC. Provide them with the old and new MAC addresses.

Useful Link - describes the license MAC in CUCM 8.x

Changing any of these (DNS, NTP, IP Address, etc.) on a UCM 8.x Publisher will require installing a new license, but getting this done and license updated is a pretty simple and straight forward task assuming you have the right info handy for TAC. Worst case, if you have issues getting a new license file would be to revert back to your previous DNS entries - putting it back to previous configurations (assuming nothing else was changed) will generate your old license MAC address, validating the license file that was just previously invalidated. This entire process changed in CUCM 9.x and higher using Cisco ELM/PLM.

Looking for some guidance on updating the DNS entries on our CUCM cluster. A colleague went through the process, but upon entering the command received a warning stating that the change would invalidate our licenses. Has anybody come across this before, and if so, what was the proper course of action to ensure license preservation?
CUCM 8.6.2
