I was cleaning the bandswitch on my SB-401 last night. I powered the
transmitter up after spraying the switch with some radio shack contact
cleaner.
Pow! the driver bandswitch wafer arced directly to the shaft that turns it.
After looking closely I noticed that there was some left over contact
cleaner
from the previous owners cleaning. Is it possible that the new cleaner
reacted with the old cleaner and formed something that would conduct?
The old contact lube was the stuff that is kinda goopy that is meant to
stay ther efor a while - like they used to use on TV tuners. Anyway the
switch wafer has permanent carbon arcs and I cannot stop it from arcing
and need a new wafer. Or a whole SB-401 for parts if someone has one.
The wafer is the driver grid wafer. The side of the wafer that connects to
the driver plate is a direct short to the shaft, and every time I turn it
on it get worse. I'll trade or pay cash to the person that comes up with
a junker or parts for me.
