Just a brief note re. using emery cloth to clean relay contacts. Just
read an app note from a relay manufacturer and they explicitly said
don't use emery cloth, sandpaper, etc. as it will ruin the contacts.
They said to use the specialized contact cleaning 'files' you see in the
electronics parts catalogs. I don't remember exactly where I read it
but they were pretty adament about it ... if I remember correctly, use
of sandpaper or emery cloth embeds 'stuff' in the contacts and that is
bad. It'll work in the short run but cause long-term problems including
shortened (or shorter?) life.

Other than that warning I agree about the contacts. They probably do
need to be cleaned.
