I have the same problem.  I've thought about a simple 9v transitor radio
battery, but I've not had the time to try it.  As far as I know, the 8.4
is a victim of the enviormental wackos--all 8.4's were mercury, and
they're out of production and/or prohibited in the US.  I'm a dentist,
and I have a "pulp tester" at the office that is now useless because I
can't find the battery anymore.  Just a mere $200....
