Just my two cents: I have rigs with both sweepers (a Swan 350 with a
pair of 6HF5's ) and 6146's (Hallicrafters HT-32). Have had both rigs
for over 10 years, and use both regularly. Believe it or not, I have had
much more trouble with the 6146's than the sweeps, although I feel more
secure regarding purity of output with the 6146's. Sweeps are capable of
much higher peak output for a given max plate dissipation, but one must
be extremely careful about holding the "key down" too long. If the rig
was designed for a sweep tube, you are probably best leaving it that
way. Many sweeps are still available through, among other sources,
Antique Electronic Supply. I would not consider converting unless the
original tube was no longer available, and even then I would look at
alternate sweeps first with similar specs before using a 6146. The 6146
is a great tube, but VERY sensitive, and a bear to stabilize if you are
not ready for it.
