hw16's, et al....true tranceive?

does the mod really make the hw-16 into a transceiver or just for adding an
extenal vfo other than the heath model?

I picked up a hw-16 that is in the hurt locker. Got it mostly fixed, but
have not tried the transmitter  yet.

In the process of putting the entire project in an article for 73 magazine.
