Hello Ken,

Think I would want to do the same thing.  I don't have an old 183,
but if it is potted with tar, you probably could just drop the shot
transformer in an old pan of boiling water.  If the potting tar would
melt, you could then dump out the old transformer.  I would just put
an audio transformer of my choice back in the can.  I would not try
and rewind the original transformer.  I would just find something
that fit inside the original can.
