HW17 or HW17A

Hello.....

I was talking with another ham on a local UHF repeater when he started
talking about his heathkit collection and his 2 meter SSB rig. We
continued to talk and he told me that it was a HW-17. I don't recall
this radio being SSB capable and I referred to Chuck's book including
checking the back for any mods........

Is this possible? Was there a mod posted somewhere or something that I
am missing regarding the HW-17 or 17A?
