SB-200 ALC mod for use with Icom 746

Has anyone used the SB-200 ALC with Icom equipment? If so, what mod did you
do to the SB-200 (if any)?

Details: I am trying to set up my SB-200 ALC to work with an Icom 746, which
wants an ALC voltage in the range of zero to minus 4 volts. I tried the
potentiometer mod, suggested for Kenwood exciters, but I find that the Icom
ALC does not kick in, no matter what I set the potentiometer to. Also, I
measure 10 v no matter what I set the potentiometer to. (If I measure the
resistance across the ALC with the power off, I do see the resistance change,
so at least I know the pot is connected right.) I just stumbled upon
another Heathkit Bulletin suggesting a zener diode mod. However this too is
in reference to Kenwood exciters, which want -8 volts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, a basic question: When the ALC is supposed to reduce the exciter
level, does the ALC voltage decrease or increase?

Thanks,
David Jaffe
