Scratchy noise thru speaker HW-101

I,m not the original owner, wish I was, but I would like to know why in the manual it  is quite specific about not turning the rig on
without a 8 ohm speaker connected. I got this rig secondhand, hmm, who knowshand and read the manual before twisting knobs.
I have this scratchy static noise at times that lessens when the rig warms up. It's not too bad but would like to cure it. Any ideas?
