Ahh, the infamous warbly LMO. It happens all the time and it's easy to
fix -- once you remove the LMO from the set. Which means removing the front
panel -- which means unsoldering the mike connector. When you get the LMO
out, remove the following panels: right side, top and the L-shaped
front-bottom. Now apply your favorite cleaner (I use WD-40) to the capacitor
wiper and back bearing and to the gear train. There is probably a bunch of
hardened grease on the gear train which you should clean off. Also lub the
turns-counter disks. They tend to bind and make the shaft hard to turn.  If
you have the nerve, you could back off the preload on the worm gear a
little. This will also make the shaft easier to turn.
