Reserve auctions

I have used ebay reserve auctions -otherwise you could get a bid so low it
would not be profitable to even box and ship the item.
However, recently , I have had 2 other hams -one a ARRL staffer- overbid on
a HT-37 transmitter , then retract their bid -giving the reason that they
had "added too many zeros, or put the comma in the wrong place". I would
have liked to have had the $2,000. that the guy from the ARRL bid for the
transmitter. I do not know why they did this , except to see the reserve
price - I am not sure that it actually worked that way. However, both
bidders had "feedbacks" of well over 100, so they knew exactly how to bid
on an auction , and the chance that they "made a mistake" was probably very
slim. I should have complained, but I did not.
Don't forget that some people view selling ham radio gear as a business , as
legitimate as any other , so they must maximize the sales price anyway they
can-just like the regular ham radio distributors do.
