HW-101/SB-102 Mic question

Hello Bob,

Hi-Z is almost anything from 25K-ohms (sometimes 10K) on up. Normal Hi-Z
mikes are nominally 50K-ohms--especially dynamic. A crystal mike can be
up in the meg-ohm range.

The SB-102 (I use this rig) is designed for a Hi-Z mike--theoretically 50K-ohms.
I use a communications mike (Hi-Z) when I need the crisp freq response toe cut
thru: DX-ing, etc.
I use a low-Z broadcast mike for nets, rag-chewing, etc when I want a warm
arm-chair sound. This does require impedance conversion. Either a transformer
mounted in a shielded box and fed into the rig's mike connector; or, a simple
one-transister preamp (9-volt battery) mounted in the box. Either works well.
The Turner 253 at 159-ohms would do well here as long as you get the
sound-quality you want.

Your main concern is to get enough mike output to give adequate ALC
action, without picking up hum. Which of the above methods you use---
the SB-102 couldn't care less!
