I bought mine in 1962 when Heath was closing them out for 319.00. Still in
operation today, it's a solid brick of an amplifier. I just recently
replaced the original 4-400 tubes. Let me caution all of you who have one of
these beauties. Beware of that pesky plate current meter, it can and will
kill you. back in 1963 I was operating on 40 meters, communicating with a
week signal. I decided to shut down the HV to eliminate the hash from the
866s during the receive period. I had my microphone in my left hand and
reached up with my right hand to throw the HV switch. My index finger
brushed the zero set screw on the meter. Due to possibly a carbon path the
zero set was sitting there with 3KV on it which lit me up like a Christmas
tree. I think the only thing that saved me was the fact that the fingers of
the same hand was at ground potential and most of the current passed through
the hand rather than the chest region to my other hand which was still
holding the mic. I'm not the only one to have experienced this problem, just
a couple of weeks ago I was chatting with a guy who related to me a similar
story from another KL-1 owner. That meter should have never been put in the
HV side of the supply, it never has behaved properly, every time HV is
present it reads up scale or sometimes down when there is no current
flowing. If there is anyone out there who has experienced the same problem
and has a fix for it, I sure would like to hear from you!

Hello again fellow green people,

One list member suggested that I ask how many on the list own a Chippewa
Linear. So here is the question; How many of you own one? I now know of
three of them from list members and one that is located in The Museum of
Radio & Technology.

73 and Thanks

Dwight
