Hi Mike,
Want an idea?  How about an RF-sensitive sidetone unit that will sound 
when it hears any of my boatanchor transmitters.  I would design one if 
my theory were up to snuff.  Feed a gate or base with a rectified and 
smoothed signal to fire a simple AF tone oscillator.  RF gain 
adjustement, maybe a tone freq adjustment.   Leave it on in my shack and 
whenever I key any of my transmitters, I get sidetone from the same 
place!  I can hear a real tone instead of the intermittent hum from my 
B&W 5100 and maybe I can tear out that terrible sounding thing in my 
Swan 500C.
