So I opened the unit- Wow. What a bad job! Almost all the solder joints
are poor- I mean Real Bad! The antenna connections, which had once been
connected, were disconnected for some reason.

Hi Scott

Many years ago as a teenager I worked in a local radio shop on Saturdays. A
customer brought in a non-working crystal set he had assembled for his son
using plastic lead (a solvent based adhesive of the time) to make the
connections. We managed to remove the plastic glue and remake all of the joints
with proper solder but I suspect that the rework cost was not cheap
compared to the component costs.
