Electrons! :-)

They are a very simple device which uses 1/2 of the secondary of a 6.3 VCT filament 
transformer and two or three resistors (in its simplest form) connected to an oscilloscope.

It takes a bit of learning to interpret its output, but it has never failed me yet.
