Mike,AM is a 100 pct duty mode same as analog tv.  You could consider running at 30% duty cyclr.  What you will have to do is watch the plate color and look for a slight color to them.
My SB 200 is one of the early ship ones... 1960's..  I have the ogiginal 572B in it and still making full power!  I try to keep drive at 25%of max rated.  I have oiled the fan multiple times.  The tubes will give long life treated right.  I treat my SB220 in the same maner.  Had if since 1975...  same results.  Same tubes too.  For a few extra watts, tubes are expensive!  Remember the diff batween 1000 and 500W is 3DB,  hard to tell the diff...  The breakover power is 100 to 200W.  Beyond that the meter goes up but not intelegibility.
