Depends on packet size and what they are using it for. I had a J4300
and J2300 for testing and I spent a lot of time beating up my Juniper SE
about it.
As far as memory, the J2300 and J4300 can only use 512M right now, but
they are supposed to be certified with 1Gig at some point. Running two
full BGP feeds (140k routes each) will use up almost all of the 512M, so
as of right now, neither one is useful for even two T1 BGP feeds (unless
you get partial routes). A J6300 can handle a gig of memory, so it will
work.
As far as throughput, with 100 byte packets, we were pushing about
30Mbps through the J4300 and about 20Mbps through the J2300 (neither cpu
appeared to be taxed at all). If you jumpt up to 250 byte packets, you
can get 50-60Mpbs through the J4300. One thing to keep in mind is that
there are performance differences between the built-in ports and
additional FE's (I can't remember which was which, but you'd get
different numbers if you went from a built-in to an additional FE versus
going between the built-in ones).
We didn't do much with filters and such, but according to Juniper, it
isn't supposed to alter the numbers at all. If you do get one, check
the ping numbers to the box and through the box. They are very goofy.
There is a bug in the pings to the box that I've seen on Juniper's
website, but nobody ever gave me a good explanation as to why pings
through the box are slow, other than "ping isn't a good measure of
performance".
