Yes, this got us a few times. But usually, it is the hookswitch problem. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad hookswitch problem. We've taken them apart done a massive cleaning job and they still fail. It reminds me of the four year expiry in the replicants on Bladerunner. 

Wish we could get the Rachael model.

  When I've had this issue reported to me in the past, what was happening
  is that the user had reversed the hook on the phone (the one used if the
  phone is mounted vertically, such as on a wall). When they hung up the
  call from the previous conversation the handset isn't actually in the
  cradle, it rests on top of the clip.  The next time a call comes in, the
  phone thinks the handset is already off hook so the user has to press
  the Answer softkey.

  Simple little item, but I've had several users at several customers get
  confused by this.

  Having said that, once (and only once) I had a phone with a defective
  hook switch, but check the reversable clip first.

  Could someone help me understand why the 7970 sometimes will not answer
  a call when you lift the handset, you have to hit the answer softkey
  that appears.  How does the phone choose which method to usse, it seems
  random to me.
  Is there a way to force it to use the handset no matter what?
