[cisco-voip] Cisco 7962 Hookswitch

The sensor is right behind where the physical hookswitch is located. The physical part of the hookswitch just pushes plastic between the two parts of the sensor when released, breaking the optical connection. I did try taking one of them apart, found the sensor, and it wasn’t dirty (and I tried blowing it off, but the phone was in a standard office location).

I’ll look into the repair option, but I’m not sure I care all that much personally. Out of 172 deployed 7962s, and just over 300 phones total (most of which have been deployed for well over a year), I have had 2 7962s hookswitches fail, and a few 3911s (but most of those were deployed outside in a dusty area).

Compared to $8 per year per phone, even just for the 7962s we have, I would have to have 5+ of them to fail per year before I could even consider SmartNET to be a practical cost, and I haven’t had that many fail in total, let alone per year (even these two were in separate years).

To me, ordering $8 SmartNET when it fails just seems tacky, and more hassle than it’s worth personally (I am able to keep a supply of spare 7962s around anyways, and we don’t chargeback departments, so it’s not a problem for us, it would be more work to purchase and do the SmartNET replacement).

Just for my own curiosity because I’ve never taken a 79x5 apart….

The lens you’re talking about is inside somewhere, correct? Presumably in the vicinity of the hookswitch?

The optical hook switches in my experience just fail, whereas the old 7960 hookswitches would be intermittent. Your experience seems to be congruent with mine.

I have never tried to repair an optical hook switch. We would just RMA the phone; but we need to do something different now. Anyone know any good service options for the Cisco phones?

Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't tell me the 7942s have hookswitch problems. We have so many hookswitch issues with the 7940s we can't keep up.

I found threads talking about earlier models, and that the 7962 switched to a optical hookswitch, but nothing about fixing one.

I have a couple of 7962s where the hookswitch has stopped working. I pulled one of them apart and didn’t find anything wrong with it visually, but after putting it back together it still isn’t working. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and perhaps found a fix?
